When MAMAMOO’s Solar released her Chinese debut single in collaboration with Taiwanese soloist 9m88 in June, it kickstarted her journey into the Chinese-language music market. Her efforts didn’t stop purely at just singing in the language—Solar contributes as a singer, lyricist, and composer for her second Chinese single, released on March 9. Through a collaboration with Taiwanese band Accusefive (告五人), “總有一顆屬於你的星球 (Your Own Star)” highlights how everyone has their own place in the world.
This single’s title translates in English as “There’s Always a Planet Just for You,” which more accurately gets its message across. Solar worked with Accusefive lead vocalist and guitarist Pan Pan An (Pan Yunan) for its composition and lyrics. “There’s always a planet that’s meant for you / So don’t let loneliness bring tears to your eyes / I don’t think it’s worth your tears,” they sing.*
The music video for the song shows Solar trying to reach out to her younger self, played by Taiwanese actress Nina Ye. Ye, who starred in the globally-acclaimed Netflix film Left-Handed Girl, achieves a full-circle moment through this music video. Her character, I-Jing, dances and listens to MAMAMOO’s “Hip” and “Dingga.” As a little Solar, Ye looks discouraged and lost until she meets older Solar and the Accusefive band members.
It’s heartwarming to see how much effort Solar has put into her Chinese solo career. By collaborating with local artists and learning Mandarin on an impressive level, the care in her work shines through. The sky is the limit.
