“Storm”: An Electrifying Pre-Release
A pre-release is important in maintaining the hype for an album and “Storm” knocks it out of the park. Taeyong’s unique cadence adds an addictive edge to the song, taking you on a ride with its pulsing beat and bold choreography. You can feel the thumping bass as the song progresses, the intensity building towards its final chorus. The performance video is just as powerful with striking thunderstorm imagery and energetic moves. It’s a formative sneak peek into the innovative sound that this album has to offer.
Dancing in the “WYLD”
Off the bat, “WYLD” reels you in with its familiar intro. Seasoned listeners may recognize the “Uh uh uh” from NCT’s 2018 hit “Neo Got My Back,” a testament to Taeyong’s dedication to his group. Taeyong has never been afraid to experiment with his sound and “WYLD” feels the most innovative out of all the title tracks he has released before. It’s sharp and charming, an emphasis on the animalistic theme present in the music video and throughout the rest of the album. Taeyong showcases a commanding energy that is hard to ignore.
Taeyong’s heavy involvement in the lyricism and production of this album is apparent in the B-sides. The album progression slows down for the continuing tracks, switching from dynamic hip-hop beats to smooth synth. The funkiness of “Hynoptic” and “I’m a Dancing Cactus” make you want to dance, while also adding a feeling that’s tranquil and serene.
“Mermaid” brings a melodic vibe to the album, balancing soft vocals with charismatic raps. This technique continues into “404 Euphoria,” continuing Taeyong’s 404 tradition predated by “404 File Not Found” and “404 Loading”. The lo-fi beat of “404 Euphoria” is dreamy and enveloping with its yearning lyrics tugging at your heartstrings.
The energy ramps back up with “Skiii” and you’re immediately drawn back to that punchy vibe that WYLD started out with. “Hot” leans into a more traditional style of hip-hop compared to the other tracks. It’s a catchy, head-bopping tune that stands out while maintaining the album’s cohesiveness.
“Feeling Myself” adds a pop element, showing off Taeyong’s ability to seamlessly hop from genre to genre. The autotune doesn’t feel overdone, but sufficient enough to make the song fun and lighthearted. Taeyong closes out WYLD with “Run,” a vocal-heavy track with a rock influence. It’s a liberating ending to such a complex first album.
From the song titles to the blend of hip-hop, synth, and pop, Taeyong’s individuality distinguishes him from the rest. WYLD is a reflection of Taeyong’s eclectic artistry as it continues to evolve. It maintains the integrity of Taeyong’s musical identity and further demonstrates just how adaptable he can be.
