Have you ever heard a song that had you on the verge of tears? A song that, when it plays, and you hear that magical instrumental, you can’t help but feel an overwhelming amount of emotions? That is what happens to me when I hear a ballad. Every once in a while, when K-Pop groups or soloists release EPs/albums, a ballad is included on the tracklist. A ballad is a song that tends to tell a story. The main characteristics of the track are melodies that tend to evoke a strong emotion, and in those melodies, you hear more acoustic instrumental work, like pianos and guitars. In those songs, the vocalists usually sing with so much emotion that you can’t help but want to sing along or sit in silence as their voices take you away. So, let’s take it back and talk about some memorable ballads.

NCT 127 - “White Night”

On March 6, 2020, NCT 127 released their jam-packed album NCT #127 Neo Zone - The 2nd Album. Packed with 13 songs, this album is home to so many memorable songs that, to this day, are fan favorites. The album is also home to many ballads, but one that I thought truly showcased the characteristics of a ballad is a B-side, “White Night.” A beautiful song, with a strong acoustic instrumental, “White Night” is a groovy R&B track that commands the room the moment it starts. The song opens with a captivating piano solo, and as the members join in, their soulful voices match the steady flow and intensity of the song. As the song progresses, so does the power and feeling in both the instrumentation and the members' vocals. Throughout the song, the members perform runs and belt out harmonies that show the passion behind the song's creation. It is a standout ballad that has remained a favorite among NCT 127 fans.

Jinyoung - “Letter”

On January 18, 2023, GOT7 member, soloist, and actor Jinyoung released his super sweet EP, Chapter 0: WITH. On the EP, there are five songs that are all a joy to listen to, but one will evoke so many emotions. “Letter” is the last song on the EP, and was such a memorable way to end the release. The moment listeners hear this song, they are instantly transported, feeling as though they are floating on a cloud. The song features rich instrumentation, and his smooth vocals elevate it further. “Letter” has an orchestral instrumental. Listeners can hear the many string instruments from beginning to end, like the faint cello heard during the verses. There is also a guitar and a drum present, which add a more dramatic effect to the song. Jinyoung delivers a measured, expressive vocal performance throughout. As listeners engage with the track, it is as if Jinyoung is telling a story through his singing, and with each verse and chorus, you can hear his tone shift. It’s something listeners will pick up on as the song progresses, and it exemplifies the track's emotional arc.

LEE HI - “Only”

On September 9, 2021, K-R&B artist LEE HI released her album, 4 ONLY. A beautiful album with 10 songs, each track is immediately engaging. One song on that album that became well-known is the last track, “Only.” A widely recognized track, “Only” is a breathtaking ballad that uses an acoustic instrumental style, adding drama to an already heart-wrenching track. The piano melody that carries the song along is soothing, and when LEE HI enters, her angelic vocals match the song's calm opening. Her vocals build alongside the instrumental in a compelling call-and-response dynamic. It is a hidden gem in the song, and LEE HI's vocals are so powerful that you can feel the emotion behind it. The song is a masterpiece, and was such an iconic way to end the EP.
