Fly High with WayV’s Eighth Mini-Album Vision Wings

WayV continues the momentum with a fresh comeback in the heat of summer. From their special album last winter with 白色定格 (Eternal White), WayV shows off their more confident side with stylistic mini-album Vision Wings. The group recently wrapped up promotions in New York City including a performance at SummerStage. Now, WayV tops off the summer with a new release to spark a new era for the group.

A New Vision
The mini-album begins with the title track of the same name, a potent anthem with heavy rapping and drum lines. WayV continues to blend traditional Chinese instrumentals with hip-hop, a staple technique of their discography since their debut in 2019. While “鸢 (Vision Wings)” is visually appealing with its dramatic warrior aesthetic and martial arts-styled choreography, the song itself falls short of its potential. The vocals are minimized to support the rap lyrics with a high note by Xiaojun towards the end of the track. The rap lines lean towards talk-based rapping with conversational tones instead of dynamic flows. It has potential to be more memorable but overall it serves as a solid introduction. The song is available in both Chinese and English.
The B-sides support the assertive concept the album pursues. “焰光蓝 (Blue Fever)” is the groovy successor to the title track, elevated by its retro beat and catchy tune. It takes the album to the next level with the smooth harmonic vocals and record scratching effects. “焰光蓝 (Blue Fever)” allows WayV’s range to shine and has the ability to be a fan favorite out of the tracklist. “满贯 (Count It)” and “主场 (Icon)” both have addictive choruses that are properly aided by the melodies provided by Ten, Kun, and Xiaojun. Hendery and YangYang offer creative flows that do not drown out the other members.
WayV has a strong vocal line and these ballad tracks continue to prove it. “Afterparty (5 a.m.)” is rich and poignant. It’s a somber, yearning follow-up that mellows out the punchy former tracks. It’s a hopelessly romantic addition where the vocal line excels. “光云之境 (Heaven’s Here With Me)” is no different, this time with Hendery and YangYang lending their voices. It’s a feel-good song that evokes a sense of unity and togetherness.
Overall, Vision Wings is an expressive release as summer carries on. It is carried by its powerful Chinese iconography and exceptional B-sides. Vision Wings rewards repeated listening, making it a strong addition to any summer playlist.
