LABOUM Returns with Unexpected Concept
The ladies of LABOUM have made a comeback with new single album I’M YOURS! While the teasers appeared particularly delicate, sweet, and overall standard, the group surprised viewers with the release of the music video teaser, revealing a new concept that involves zombies. Talk about throwing a curveball!
The Video
We’ve certainly never seen such an edgy video from the group, so let’s begin with discussing the visual and storyline of “Turn It On.” The music video stars UKISS and UNB’s Jun as the main lead, and the video opens up with him as a zombie ambling toward Solbin, who is being chased through a dark forest of trees. The thrilling opening ends in an open field with Jun charging toward Solbin and the full group, only to be shot in the heart. Quite a surprising opening, no?
This opening really doesn’t give a clue as to what the rest of the music video or the song has in store. In fact, it appears to be totally separate until the second verse, where we see zombie Jun tied to a bed and being tended to by the members. As the video unfolds, we see the girls working to return the humanity to him. I can’t really blame them, considering you’ll never come across such an attractive undead person. The video ends with Jun’s humanity returned, but in the time of his recovery the girls have been attacked by a horde of zombies and converted themselves, ending on a creepy note.
Unexpected is an understatement when it comes to this concept and video from the group. While it is indeed intriguing and beautifully shot, it doesn’t exactly fit with the song lyrics or the overall concept outside of the zombie element. The fashion and atmosphere of the rest of the video is much brighter and more elegant, totally contrasting the opening video that presented a cold and dangerous front. Nonetheless, the zombie element certainly brings attention to the group and ropes you into giving the song a chance if you hadn’t intended to before.
The Album
Despite being a track not really expected to accompany a zombie concept, “Turn It On” is still a really good song. The catchy pop track showcases the vocal strength of the members and has an addictive beat that gets stuck in your head after one listen. It’s a warm love song that’s definitely going to find itself on your repeat playlist.
I’M YOURS also features two B-sides, “Heal Me” and “체온 (Original Version).” “Heal Me” is a soft, sensual R&B ballad that elicits a feeling of peace, yet has a contrasting element of melancholy that makes it beautiful. While the song has traditional ballad elements of a slower tempo and is vocally-focused, the subtle R&B beats make it feel more original. “체온 (Original Version)” in contrast is a light acoustic track that evokes a feeling of a warm spring day and closes out the album on a warm note. When all is said and done, this single album is a great release that can definitely convert you into a LABOUM fan if you weren’t one before. If you were, it’s a short, sweet treat that surely won’t disappoint.
