Project Unit WJMK’s “STRONG” Debut
The new girl group project unit from Fantagio and Starship Entertainment called WJMK debuted on Friday, June 1 with the music video for their debut song “STRONG.” WJMK consists of four members, two members from Cosmic Girls (Seola and Luda) and two members from Weki Meki (Yoojung and Doyeon). The project was announced in early May this year.
The song is titled “STRONG” and it is a cute, happy track that gives off a summer vibe. The melody is upbeat and hard to not sing and dance along with, made only better with lyrics about the heart-fluttering feeling of having a big crush on someone. Anyone can relate to the feelings of being both nervous and excited at the same time when thinking of a crush and the idea of meeting up with them, not really knowing how to act or what to do. With a catchy beat and repetitive lyrics in the chorus, the song is easy to follow along when listening, especially the “come and hug me now” parts of the lyrics.
The first thing that caught my eye when I was watching the video was the colors. The music video has two main color themes: blue and red and also green and white. These colors set the mood in the video, as they are used as both background colors and in their clothing as well, really making it a big part of the concept. Blue is usually a color associated with sadness, but the way they did it in the video, it seems happy. Green can be associated with freshness, and so it fits the video quite well. These colors might have been chosen due to the fact that they are the main colors of the music video sponsors (Pepsi and Chilsung Cider—and there is no doubt when watching the video that it is indeed an ad). The storyline is random and shows a playful side of the members, making it fun to watch. The choreography matches well with the upbeat melody and all four girls get their time to shine in their individual scenes.
In addition to the official music video, Starship Entertainment also released a “BLUE” version of it on their YouTube channel, with only the blue-themed shots plus other performance and member-focused scenes that were not shown in the original music video.
The concept is nothing new or highly exciting but it is still a fun song with a nice and catchy beat that will surely liven up the season as another summer hit.
