WJSN, Please?
Starship Entertainment’s sophomore girl group WJSN is back with their fifth mini-album WJ Please? — seven months after their previous release. Chinese members Mei Qi, Xuan Yi, and Cheng Xiao are not participating in this comeback as the first two are preparing to debut with Chinese Produce 101 group Rocket Girls (where they won first and second place, respectively!), and Cheng Xiao is currently filming her acting debut in a Chinese historical drama.
“Save Me, Save You”
We can’t dispute the fact that WJSN has found their signature sound and concept. Like their previous comeback, “Save Me, Save You” has a very dreamy feel both visually and musically. They are, after all, known as the Cosmic Girls. “Save Me, Save You” is a fresh EDM track that captures the essence of WJSN; it has a catchy hook and intermittent rap verses that keep things interesting, and the period between those verses is never static.
Visually, the music video is absolutely beautiful. The girls sport a mix between the traditional dreamy look and a schoolgirl concept, with a separate scene depicting them in rather elegant outfits. The title is all around quintessential WJSN, having its own unique charm. It’s a very well done comeback and perhaps one of their strongest to date.
The Album
The WJ, Please? mini-album features six songs in total, with a focus on upbeat pop tracks for the majority of the album. The three B-sides that follow the title, “너, 너, 너,” “아이야,” and “가면무도회,” all sound very similar to “Save Me, Save You” and don’t necessarily stand out much. But, as previously stated, the title is quite good, which means these songs are naturally quite good as well. It really all comes down to personal taste towards an album’s musical diversity.
But wait, there are still two more tracks to discuss! “Hurry Up” has a very retro feel and works in stark contrast to the previous tracks. It’s an upbeat, fun song, and it may just be our favorite off the album. The mini concludes with “2월의 봄,” a soft R&B ballad that captures the vocal prowess of the group while contributing another musical genre to the album. The group rounds off WJ, Please? with this warm, fuzzy track guaranteed to leave you feeling absolutely content.
There is often a stigma around traditional girl group concepts, and WJSN is a group that has likely fallen into that category. Unfortunately and as a result, they don’t tend to make as many waves with their comebacks as other more flamboyant groups. Still, WJSN has proven their talent time and time again, and they certainly deserve your attention.
