Weki Meki is so “Picky Picky” in Latest Release
After returning to the scene back in October with the uncharacteristic, ultimate girl crush concept, Weki Meki had fans on their toes wondering what the next concept would be. On May 14, the girl group returned once again, this time with a more familiar school girl concept. The new single album LOCK END LOL features three new tracks.
The Title: “Picky Picky”
There’s no doubt that the new title is super catchy. After one listen, you’ll find yourself humming the main melody line, “like it, don’t like it, love it, don’t want it, Weki Meki, i’m so picky.” The electro-pop beat is addicting as well, with a refrain that builds up tension nicely leading into the chorus. The track is reminiscent of earlier comeback “La La La,” with a distinct style that is different from most other girl groups.
There is a lot going on visually in the accompanying music video. There are about five different outfits used throughout the video ranging from school uniforms to rocker garb, which can be a little overstimulating at some moments. I can’t really decide how I feel about the high school concept either, as it seems somewhat of a step back from what the group had in “Crush.” Still, the shots in the music video are quite pretty, with lots of color popping in most scenes. Almost all the members have a touch of hair dye, which helps add to this effect. Overall, “Picky Picky” is a solid return for the group.
The Album
Accompanying the title track, LOCK END LOL features two new B-sides as well. “너 하고 싶은 거 다 해 (Whatever U Want)” has a bubblegum pop flavor to the melody, which contrasts the title. If you like the high energy and bouncy J-Pop kind of sound, this will be your new jam. If not, it’s a track that can easily be skipped. “좋아한다 안 한다 (Petal fortune)” has a more modern and acoustic pop sound, with a nice R&B-influenced rhythmic beat, and is definitely the preferable B-side on the album. These three tracks present a different musical side to Weki Meki, which is a nice contrast for the short single album. Still, “Picky Picky” is definitely the standout track on LOCK END LOL. In general, the album doesn’t do the greatest job of showcasing this team’s talent.
