Caught the latest season of Kingdom but its finale leaving you more questions than answers? Good news for you fans out there—Netflix has confirmed the production of Kingdom: Ashin of the North, a special episode continuation of the hit series with the origin story of the mysterious new character, Ashin.
Kingdom: Ashin of the North is a sidequel (a sequel which portrays events that occur at the same time as the original work, but with different characters in a different setting) from Kingdom season two and a backstory about the mysterious character Lee Chang’s group encountered on their journey north to discover the origins of the infected. The surprising appearance of Jun Jihyun as the role of Ashin at the end of Kingdom’s second season intrigued audiences. In this anticipated bonus story, Jun Jihyun as Ashin will unveil the mystery behind her identity, as well as the history of the resurrection plant.
Park Byungeun, who made a lasting impression in the second season of Kingdom as the head of the Royal Commandery Min Chirok, is also confirmed to star. The new story will delve into what had happened to Ashin in the past in the northern region and the two characters’ unique relationship.
Kim Seonghun, who directed Kingdom season one and oversaw the production for season two, will team up again with Kim Eunhee, who scripted the first two seasons. With these two core creators on board this project, this special episode will likely be an important piece to the puzzling lore of this K-zombie series. Baram Pictures, BA Entertainment, and Studio Dragon will also co-produce this special episode.
Kingdom: Ashin of the North will be released worldwide exclusively on Netflix sometime in 2021. Specifics of this special episode remain vague, but until then, catch the announcement trailer below here:
