Get Away With fromis_9 in “WE GO”

With warmer days just around the corner, fromis_9 is back! Picking up where last September’s “Feel Good (SECRET CODE)” left off, their new song “WE GO” is filled with spunk and topped off with just a hint of retro to make for the perfect start to summer.

The song starts off with a vintage stereo effect before coming in full force with tropical vibes and a springy funk guitar hook. There’s not much build in the song, instead moving from start to finish at an incredibly energetic pace reminiscent of the ‘80s—a recipe for instant summer K-Pop success. Like K-Pop’s catchiest songs, most of the appeal lies in the track’s repetitive chorus. On top of being a rather predictable song, “WE GO” also follows a similar structure to fromis_9’s last title “Feel Good (SECRET CODE),” but this isn’t a bad thing—the girls have simply found a niche in K-Pop that’s fromis_9-shaped. It allows them to tiptoe the line between cutesy and girl crush concepts, catering to almost any audience.

If “WE GO” is fun, then the music video for the song is a downright blast. Capitalizing on the desire to travel and the omnipresence of social media—two of the biggest concepts found in the COVID-19 times of K-Pop—the video for “WE GO” shows the girls daydreaming about travelling as they browse social media. Shifting between the girls Photoshopping their dream vacations and shots of them on location in tropical regions, the result is a remarkably high-quality video that stands out from anything else released this season. Though travel restrictions are still in place with many people antsy to leave their homes, fromis_9 makes just the idea of travel almost as fun as the real thing.

Their single album 9 WAY TICKET also includes B-sides “Airplane Mode” and “Promise.” Sticking with the theme of travel, “Airplane Mode” takes a future-pop approach instead of the retro one found in “WE GO,” with a stripped back bassline in the pre-chorus that serves as the hallmark of the song. “Promise” sounds like something off a K-Drama OST, refreshing but so subdued it’s rather forgettable, at least until Jiwon’s sudden belted note in the second verse. The easy and enjoyable tones make the song the ideal closer of the album and for any upcoming summer nights.
