PURPLE K!SS’s first comeback is certainly a memorable one! After a successful debut with over 20 million views, the rookie girl group is back with their first comeback with a brand new concept and feel. Where “Ponzona” featured a darker and more intense aesthetic, “Zombie” is a surprisingly upbeat and cute concept featuring everyone’s favorite Halloween creatures, zombies. “Zombie” brings out the fun and funky side of the Halloween season, and the track has a distinct charm that shows the girls have multifaceted talents.

“Zombie” has a distinct upbeat and funky composition, heavily featuring a funk acoustic guitar along with the driving beat. The guitar gives the song a hint of retro vibes, which lends itself well to the girls’ vocals. It’s hard not to find the repetition of “zombie” at the chorus stuck in your head, which makes the song even more infectious. The higher register vocals give off a bit more of a cutesy feel, but it fits very well with the overall tone set by the song. The track flows well, even as rap is introduced. Everything about “Zombie” is fun and lively, so if you need a pick-me-up, don’t miss out on this track!

The video also matches the playful vibe of the song, despite the presence of the songs’ namesake. It’s an interesting contrast to show a post-apocalyptic world alongside such a happy track, with this contrast only further emphasized by the neon colors and overly campy horror elements placed within the video. It’s also worth mentioning that despite the cutesy type of sound and concept, the outfits stand out in contrast, particularly the black and pink punk outfits used during the choreography shots outside of the shop labelled “The Kiss of Death.” It’s very refreshing to have a dark concept with an upbeat campy twist to be paired together, and while on paper it may seem like a bad idea, “Zombie” executes it perfectly. Even if you weren’t a fan of PURPLE K!SS’s debut, it’s hard not to fall in love with this new comeback.
