Orange Caramel Plays Optical Games in "My Copycat" Comeback

In “My Copycat,” the quirky and bubbly trio Orange Caramel delivers a fun-filled follow up to their addictive “Catallena.”

Orange Caramel traded in their sushi costumes for Where’s Waldo?-inspired stripes and overalls in their comeback “My Copycat,” released on August 17, 2014. The bouncy, saxophone-filled track, playful concept, and easy-to-follow choreography blended perfectly to showcase Orange Caramel’s trademark quirkiness that sets them apart from origin group AFTER SCHOOL. The trio pushed the envelope of concepts by turning their music video and album into one big game of “Spot the Difference” and finding Raina, Nana, and Lizzy.

The group's label, Pledis Entertainment, struck a deal with DreamWorks to incorporate Where’s Waldo? into the group’s concept and teamed up with the music video production duo Digipedi, who directed the group’s previous videos “Catallena” and “Lipstick.” Like its predecessors, the video for “My Copycat” is whimsical, with the members sporting fake eyes painted on the backs of their eyelids, large pink feathery hats, and neon-colored outfits that pop against the equally bright backdrops.

In the “My Copycat” video, viewers play a series of games with the bubbly members of Orange Caramel. Starting with "Spot the Difference" at level one, the trio poses in various scenes that feature swinging monkeys, parrots, and chameleons on the move. At level two, viewers zoom out and have to find the hidden girls in a large room, among dozens of people. Viewers should also look out for comedian Cho Seho, Nana’s cast member on the variety show Roommate.

The fun was taken to another level with the first live performance of “My Copycat” on the August 29 episode of Music Bank. Fans in the audience were looped into an impromptu Where’s Waldo? game with the members, where viewers at home had to find the girls hiding among everyone dressed in orange. Just as the lyrics call for one to, “dance like I do, shake like this, do like I do,” viewers may also find themselves dancing along with Orange Caramel and bouncing from side to side.

Like their “Catallena” performances, Orange Caramel found ways to make each live performance comical and unique during their promotions. In later performances, Lizzy showed off her jump rope skills and the members re-created looks of pop culture icons like Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe, and the characters of Frozen. Fans can also see just how many SEVENTEEN, PRISTIN, and I.O.I members made special appearances while looking back at the stages!

Despite the viral popularity of many of Orange Caramel’s songs, the trio didn’t manage to take home a music show award before the members parted ways in 2018. “My Copycat” peaked at No. 19 on the Gaon Digital SongChart during the week of its release, and just a month later they released their third single of the year and last as a group, “The Gangnam Avenue.”
