PIXY Returns as the “Villain” in Latest Comeback

Rookie group PIXY have made a comeback with their third mini-album REBORN, with the title track “Villain.” This is the longest wait for a comeback from the girls, with their last album being back in October of last year. The group also returned as a temporary quintet with member and leader Ella being on a hiatus due to health reasons.

REBORN is a seven song album featuring the title track, an instrumental of the title track, and five other songs. The style of this album is slightly different from their previous comebacks as the girls experiment with a bit of a different concept, changing from the horror themes and darker concepts to being “reborn” following the name of the album.

“Villain” has a different vibe from the group’s previous title tracks. The sound is immediately more upbeat compared to previous tracks such as “Wings” and “Bewitched,” and it has a fun electro groove to the instrumental. The song overall is catchy, enticing current fans as well as introducing new fans to PIXY.

The girls always find ways for their vocals to match the concept of the track. The vocals on this track are focused on their lower registers and are more whisper-like, particularly in verse one into the chorus. As the song progresses and the instrumental picks up, so do the vocals. However, the raps really shined in this song. Satbyeol absolutely carries her rap verses, one of which has the iconic line, “I don’t give an F what you say.”

The opening tagline, “PIXY has been reborn,” indicates this is the start of a new era for the girls both as a group and in their storyline. This is exciting for numerous reasons—the biggest one being the growth of the group and seeing more of their abilities shine.

The music video ties into the new era of the storyline for the group. As described in the description of the music video, the girls are no longer fairies and they are reborn to bring any evils to justice. The lyrics also tie in well, particularly in the chorus: “I just lost my memory in the new life.”

The music video has much brighter aesthetics than their previous ones as they leave the horror concept behind and are reborn into this new era. It even shows in the styling of their outfits as they wear brighter colors. The choreography also seems less complex than before, but still showcases their abilities to try something new and keep it unique.

The biggest part of the storyline that can be seen in the video is Satbyeol and Dajeong shooting what appears to be the older versions of themselves seen in the fairy forest, indicating their new selves are reborn. This was a super creative way to introduce the new concept!
