Pull Up and Get “Shut Down”

As the title track of their second ever full album, “Shut Down” makes their entrance into becoming another smash hit for the girl group. With the blend of classical instruments and hip-hop elements, down to the heavy use of a garage shutter coming down, “Shut Down” is meant to make an impact and remind those near and far that BLACKPINK is indeed in your area, and here to make their mark.

“Shut Down” is sassy, confident, and full of attitude: the song gives the impression that if you can’t keep up with the girls of BLACKPINK, then that's just too bad. If someone can’t handle all the group’s charisma, the girls are going to keep “shutting it down” and continue being a force to be reckoned with. As for the music video of “Shut Down,” it’s no surprise that BLACKPINK continues to bring fashion and style to their work, but what makes this video special are all the little Easter eggs and callbacks to their previous releases. Ranging from Rosé’s planet from “WHISTLE”, Jennie’s tank from “DDU-DU DDU-DU,” the mural and rain for Jisoo also from “DDU-DU DDU-DU,” and Lisa’s katana from the same music video, there is so much to discover each time you watch “Shut Down.” Not to mention, of course, the killer choreography.

The Album

Overall, BLACKPINK delivers a solid album that offers a good balance between hip-hop/dance tracks and mellow songs, the latter of which are a nice refreshing take that we do not get to see often from the girl group. “Pink Venom” took the helm as the pre-release track that was released a month before BORN PINK. The song definitely followed the group’s formulaic style that fans know and love, with their standard catchy chorus, choreography, and dance break section with repeated words to end off the song. “Pink Venom” definitely left fans wanting more and something different, and the girls did not disappoint. For those who are wanting a grittier and darker sound from BLACKPINK, songs like “Typa Girl” and “Tally” are the given girl boss and confident tracks to listen to. Fans are also treated to a Rosê solo song with “Hard to Love,” as well as a gut-wrenching, in-your-feelings ballad titled, “The Happiest Girl.” Rounding out the more mellow to upbeat songs, “Yeah Yeah Yeah” and “Ready For Love” close out the album.

With a world tour on the horizon, it seems like BORN PINK is marking the end of a chapter and the start of a new era for BLACKPINK. The release is a solid album from the girl group, and will leave fans wanting even more from the girls of BLACKPINK.
