AB6IX Shows a Darker Side with “LOSER”

Typically when thinking of AB6IX’s musical legacy, the first thing that comes to mind is a lighter, upbeat concept like their previous comeback “Sugarcoat.” Even with darker concepts visually, the lyrical composition of the tracks is more optimistic. But if it isn’t already obvious in the name of the title “LOSER,” we see a much darker and gloomier side to the quartet.

Upon first listening, it may not be obvious by the melody alone just how pessimistic the song is at its core. The melody has a classic pop-EDM influence not unlike a lot of the title tracks from the group. However, the lyrics paint a rather bleak mindset filled with darkness, which was quite surprising and contrasts quite strongly with the melody. The hook of the repeated phrase “loser” will get the track stuck in your head quite easily. It’s also interesting to note that Woojin’s rap tone seems a bit higher than his usual deep timbre, which would seem appropriate for this type of track. That’s just a noticeably interesting difference for the song.

The video opens up with the boys in a dark graveyard setting next to a casket, surrounded by bodies in black hoods and snow falling from the bright red and blue sky. The church graveyard doubles as a dance set in the first chorus, with the stained glass windows of the gazebo making multiple appearances as well in Daehwi’s solo shot. The colors used are sharp and intense, with oranges and reds of fire highlighting an otherwise dark set. The outfits sometimes are a major contrast to the setting (like Daehwi’s purple leather pants, which was unexpected), but overall it’s nice to see them release a dark concept for once.
