VAV Makes a Return to K-Pop after Nearly Three Years

It’s been two years and nine months since VAV has graced the K-Pop industry. In that time, military requirements were completed and Baron withdrew from the group. Seventh mini-album Subcönscióus comes two years and nine months after the release of their sixth EP MADE FOR TWO. New title track “Designer” once again expands on VAV’s extensive Latin-influenced music, the same genre that gained them popularity years ago.

If there’s one thing VAV does well, it’s Latin-inspired music and as such, it really doesn’t get old. “Designer” has a very summery hip-hop feel that makes it instantly catchy. The composition is classically K-Pop, with interspersed vocal and rap lines in the verses. What I found most noticeable was Ziu’s particular vocal color coming out strongly in his lines, as well as Lou’s deep voiced raps. There is a certain maturity that shines through this track, reminding the listener that this group is indeed a veteran third generation group.

The music video supports the concept heavily, with many colorful summer themes alongside classic Latin flair, most notable in Lou’s Mexican bullfighter outfit. The video appears to be shot in California, so the summer feeling is in full effect with palm trees, plentiful sunshine, and mountain backgrounds. The two main concepts do seem somewhat contrary, with Ayno dressed as a skater boy in a skate park and Ziu dressed as a mafia boss wreaking havoc on a wealthy compound, but the outfits showcase the duality of the group, with a mature sexy vibe contrasted with a more boyish artistic look.
