Baby DONT Cry’s Own Brand of Rock is Here to Stay

They’re P NATION’s first girl group—and the bandwagon everyone will want to be on soon. The four-member band Baby DONT Cry (베이비돈크라이) released their second digital single “I DONT CARE” on November 19, launching their full-scale comeback activities.

The group is comprised of four members: Yihyun (이현), Kumi (쿠미), Mia (미아), and Beni (베니), between the ages of 16 and 19. The name of the band may remind Millennials and (probably) Gen Zs of the cult 1999 movie Boys Don’t Cry,  while Gen X may think first of a famous song by The Cure. While we can't completely rule out such influences in the choice of the name (after all, managers at P NATION may very well fall into any of those categories, right?), the explanation of the meaning of the name is as follows: “Baby signifies not merely an infant, but a soul as pure and clear as a baby's. It embodies a being that is kind and innocent, yet possesses inner strength to overcome hardship and adversity without faltering, moving forward undaunted.”

Baby DONT Cry debuted last June with their first single “F Girl”, already leaving a strong impression as a next-generation girl group. They showcased an adorable, fresh, and innocent look, but their attitude was already all about self-assurance, aiming for authenticity rather than playing to cliché femininity.

They championed a unique genre—Baby Rock. They can be cute and powerful at the same time, they want to transcend boundaries and establish themselves as a musical act with unique flavor.

“I DONT CARE”

Bursting with energy, colorful, and totally catchy, “I DONT CARE” is the kind of track you can’t stop jumping and dancing to. It’s the result of the teamwork of a number of star producers, both from Korea and abroad. The credits, in fact, include VVN and IDO from THE BLACK LABEL, and even the renowned producer Tommy Brown, a man whose signature can be found in the works of international superstars such as The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, and Chris Brown, as well as leading K-pop artists including G-DRAGON, TWICE, and LE SSERAFIM.

It’s also worth mentioning that we’re talking about a three-minute piece (a rare feat nowadays in K-Pop) that keeps the energy high from beginning to end without a single dip. It’s poised to be trendy, and the view count on YouTube (rising towards the 3M mark at the moment of the writing) confirms that Baby DONT Cry is the group you don’t want to miss out on.

What does “I DONT CARE” mean to the girls?

Baby DONT Cry have been featured in a stunning photoshoot by star photographer Kim Heejune, published in the December issue of Dazed Korea, along with some quotes by the girls themselves on their second single. Here’s what they said:

Yihyun shared her hope that the group’s music will become a source of comfort for listeners—something to turn to during difficult times, offering reassurance and encouragement to express and embrace one’s emotions. This sentiment is powerfully reflected in her own words: "We’ve poured intense excitement and anticipation into the album—the feeling of living freely, honestly revealing our emotions in our own way. If the world were a place where tears no longer fell, I think it would be a truly hardened world. Still, even then, Baby DONT Cry would probably keep singing songs that soothe the heart. Songs that say, ‘It’s okay to cry’."

One of the two Japanese members of the group, Kumi, imagines that if the album had a color, it would be a shade of deep purple that envelops the listener, adding: “It’s calm but strong, a color that holds a sense of ease.” She then explains that the album is true to the girls’ “unending impulses”, which have been poured and unfiltered in the making. She suggests paying special attention to the chorus: “It becomes richer the more you listen to it. It’s also a moment where you can truly feel the full energy of youth. The violet impulse of unstoppable youth—a color that’s calm but strong, relaxed yet ultimately explosive. Maybe it’s the strongest color of all.”

Mia, the other Japanese member out of the four, shone a light on the choreography for “I DONT CARE”, describing it as one that gives people courage. “It’s intense enough to leave you breathless—almost as if it grips the viewer’s heart. During the climax, when we whip our heads around, the choreography really explodes. That moment is incredibly thrilling."

Finally, Beni, the maknae of the group, commented on the image they all present to the world, describing herself and her fellow members as “girls who are more attractive because they’re neither sweet nor innocent. I wanted to express not simple rebellion but genuine honesty and independence. I believe the faces of ‘real girls,’ where anxiety and confidence coexist and breathe together, are much more captivating than perfectly polished prettiness.”
