BOYNEXTDOOR Takes No Genre To Another Level In New Mini Album

Taking “no genre” to the next level, BOYNEXTDOOR has returned with a new mini-album that doesn’t stick to one specific genre. This is something new and interesting. Every song on this mini-album is different; none of the genres are the same. Starting from the beginning, we are sent through many decades of music, and the boys do a phenomenal job giving each genre/decade its shine. There are seven songs on No Genre, and they are all outstanding.

No Genre Tracklist:

  1. “123-78”

  2. “I Feel Good” (Title Track)

  3. “Step By Step”

  4. “Is That True?”

  5. “Next Mistake”

  6. “IF I SAY, I LOVE YOU”

  7. “I Feel Good (English Ver.)”

A Trip Through the Decades and Genres With BOYNEXTDOOR

The mini-album starts with the ‘60s-inspired groovy track “123-78.” This breakup song is upbeat and features a variety of instruments that add to the retro vibe of the song. The drums, horns, and piano make the song more cheerful. While listening to this song, you can’t help but imagine them lined up on stage, with the long mic stands, donned in black-tie suits, with a band around them. Sticking with the retro sound, the members sing this in a more show-tune style. For example, they drag out some words and sing with more soul in their voices. It’s a great start to the album, and it became an instant favorite of mine.

The next song on the mini-album is the title track, “I Feel Good,” and trust, you will feel good while listening to it. BOYNEXTDOOR knows how to make a fun track, and they did not disappoint with this one. “I Feel Good” still sticks to that retro sound but adds an extra rock influence to the song. Everything about this song is addictive: the beat, their vocals, and the lyrics. “I feel good, I feel good, I feel good. U won’t. I feel good, I feel good, I feel good. Y’all want?” I found myself singing this song all day. Like their previous title tracks, this one is energetic and exciting. This song has a rock influence, and the members have a raspy tone in their voices that adds to the concept. There is also an English version of the title track. Offered in two different languages, you can see just how uplifting this track is, giving the message that it's great to feel good about yourself.

The music video looks like it was so much fun film. For the song's concept about being happy with yourself and not wanting to conform to the norm, the boys show nothing but happiness in this video. Watching them jump around, smile, and dance will also bring a smile to your face. Speaking of dance, the choreography is quirky, bubbly, and animated. The arm sways, jumps, and synchronized movements make this an eye-catching dance that many will recreate.

“Step By Step” is the next track, and we are now moving to the ‘70s/‘80s. This funk track is a new look into pop and a groovy track that will make you sway along to the beat. The synth sound is reminiscent of the ‘80s, and the funk sound is the 1970’s influence. This song is a hit and will have you ready to boogie on the dance floor.

The next track is “Is That True?” and it is true—this song is a hit. This song is the closest to the usual sound we hear from BOYNEXTDOOR. It’s lighthearted with a striking beat that is captivating. The track has a soothing aspect that will make you smile the moment it starts. “Is That True?” is a playful track showcasing the members' vocal skills. They sing in this lower register, with a hint of falsetto and carefree tone.

The next track, “Next Mistake,” has an R&B sound mixed with techno. For a two-minute song, the boys pack a lot of talented vocals and hard-hitting raps into it. When the song starts, the sound of the train zooming by adds a city feeling to it. “Next Mistake” is more mellow compared to the previous songs and gives a more relaxed vibe to the track.

We know this song! “IF I SAY, I LOVE YOU” is a previously released track that many love. The track is upbeat and just so lovely. The members sing with falsettos, and the vocalists really shine in this track. Something that stood out to me and many other ONEDOORs is how they say “I love you” in different languages, showing that their love doesn’t stop in one language. It’s a beautiful song that was a great addition to the mini-album.

No Genre is a fantastic mini-album. The members prove that they can pull off any genre and show just how talented they really are. I would recommend this EP to anyone trying to get into BOYNEXTDOOR. It’s a great representation of who the boys are. So, check out No Genre and see which song puts a smile on your face.
