Just ahead of their ninth anniversary, NCT Dream returns with a reinvented blast from the past. On July 14, NCT Dream released their fifth full album, Go Back To The Future. With visuals inspired by the 1985 film “Back to the Future,” this album takes on a retro approach to the classic neo sound, but still keeps it fresh and engaging.

Double Trouble: “BTTF” and “Chiller”
For the album rollout, NCT Dream announced they would have double title tracks: “BTTF” and “Chiller.” “BTTF” dropped on July 8, a glimpse of what was to come just a week later. NCT Dream’s music videos are nothing short of fun and “BTTF” is no exception. The song is a fast-paced, futuristic treat that doesn’t shy away from NCT’s signature experimental sound with electric beats and a powerful chorus. I admit, it was a bit jarring to hear the song for the first time but it doesn’t hesitate to jump right in and take you on a ride. “BTTF” is a unique experience that sends a jolt through you right off the bat with its blend of hip-hop and retro sound. It’s hard for nostalgia not to wash over me when seeing the transitions from present day to their debut. The matching pajamas, the dorm rooms, and especially the hoverboards; it’s a satisfying reminder of how far they’ve come in the last nine years. It’s a pleasant blend of hip-hop and synth that captures your interest the entire time. The lyrics “Upon any timeline, we’re complete” tug on your heartstrings in the midst of the energetic tune, a sweet reminder of their bond as a group.
“Chiller” is an equally enjoyable track, supporting “BTTF” as a precursor and successor in story and tracklist. The retro composition is amped up and this song feels much more melodic than “BTTF.” While both titles have catchy, upbeat choruses, they appear to have dueling vibes. “BTTF” launches you into their world while “Chiller” carries you through their journey. The warped chords make for the perfect earworm. It is much more synth heavy and electronic compared to the rest of the album. The music video operates as a performance video of the highest quality with the dynamic choreography being performed from beginning to end.
NCT Dream has made a name for themselves with their stellar B-Sides and the accompanying tracks don’t fall short of expectation. “I Like It” keeps the dance vibes going as it has a more pop edge to it. It’s such a groovy song that is topped off with soulful vocals from members Haechan, Chenle, and Renjun. “Dream Team” is a personal favorite, a triumphant anthem that captures the vibrant heat of summer. It’s carefree with a rock influence, a reiteration of the collaborative effort that connects the members of NCT Dream. The mid-album break, “Interlude: Back to Our Paradise,” is a surreal deviation from the previous tracks. What was once a fast-paced trip is now a dreamy voyage, where the listener is carried by the flows of the group’s rapline.
The tempo of the latter half of the album is slowed down compared to the former. The acoustic ballad “‘Bout You” invokes the feeling of being whisked away by a new love. It’s straight out of a coming-of-age film that highlights the chance meeting of someone you’ll appreciate for the rest of your life. The next track, “That Summer,” is a cheerful yet soft jam. The lyrics “In the blink of an eye, the season slipped away, but it left behind a flavor” stir up tender emotions of an unforgettable time in one’s life where memories come rushing in from the change in weather. “Miss You” is a bittersweet goodbye to the past with a ‘90s influence that leads into the conclusion of this album. “Beautiful Sailing” is a sentimental ending on our journey with NCT Dream as they travel through the past and back to the present day. It leaves a sense of longing to go back until you discover the potential of what’s to come.
Go Back To The Future is a striking culmination that reflects NCT Dream’s growth as artists in their near decade long career. Their homage to their past eras blends beautifully in a symphony that’s sure to entertain fans and casual listeners alike. With this release, NCT Dream solidifies themselves as champions of their own future.
