After only releasing singles since her debut in 2023, soloist YOU DAYEON put out her first EP on July 5. New Age takes a different approach from her previous songs by highlighting the moombahton genre. This EP includes three new tracks and their instrumentals.
Career Prior to Solo Debut
YOU DAYEON first debuted as a member of the girl group LIPBUBBLE. Using the stage name Seoryn, she debuted on March 22, 2017. She served as the group’s main vocalist and even designed their logo. Their debut single “POPCORN” and their second song “Yellow Pink” showed LIPBUBBLE’s enthusiastic energy, but the group disbanded on May 20, 2019.
YOU DAYEON continued to pursue a music career through survival shows in the following years. She competed on the ninth season of the rap-focused competition show SHOW ME THE MONEY in 2020, and then appeared on Girls Planet 999 in 2021. Though she did not win on either show, she would eventually get to debut as a soloist.
Solo Singles
YOU DAYEON made her solo debut with the trap-influenced track “down down down” on October 20, 2023. Under DOT Music, she would release two more singles in 2024—“text me” and “keep it low.” The two explored genres such as R&B, pop, and future garage, a genre that combines dubstep and UK garage.
In 2025, she switched over to Makeus Music Group (MMG) and released her first English single “TALK” on April 8. YOU DAYEON tried another new genre with city pop. The song describes how people “talk” using body language. In this case, two people communicate romantic feelings through a look they share on the dance floor.
New Age
The title track “Oh My” and the B-side “Dive” take inspiration from the moombahton genre. “Oh My” blends moombahton with pop while “Dive” blends it with the house genre. The music video for “Oh My” depicts YOU DAYEON falling in love with a boy who works at an ice cream stand. The scenes of having fun at the skatepark and dancing on the beach create summer imagery.
The final B-side of the EP, “DokiDoki♥ (ドキドキ),” takes a lighter approach. Its instrumental combines plucked strings with electronic elements for a delicate sound. As evidenced by YOU DAYEON’s concept photos for New Age, this song’s concept comes from romance shoujo manga, or manga marketed towards young girls and women. Though its title comes from the Japanese phrase doki doki (the onomatopoeia of a heartbeat), the song includes mostly Korean lyrics. All three original tracks from New Age offer separate musical interpretations of summer emotions.
