Moonbyul Amps up the Intensity in “Hertz”

Moonbyuls “Hertz” returns to a strong concept similar to her early solo days backed by the rock genre, a sound she has consistently implemented for the past year. Deriving its name from a unit of frequency representing one cycle per second, “Hertz” mashes Moonbyul’s recent style with an image last seen in 2020’s “Eclipse.” It all comes together through REV, her newest single album released on March 25.

  3. “MOMENTUM”

While Moonbyul embraces rock in 2022’s “C.I.TT (Cheese in the Trap),” her 2025 title tracks repeatedly highlight the broad genre. With “S.O.S,” “Goodbyes and Sad Eyes,” and her Japanese debut title track “Hoshiakari,” Moonbyul expresses themes of yearning, healing, and gratitude. Through “Hertz,” Moonbyul is in control with a confident, charismatic attitude. Its rock and trap instrumental adds a layer of intensity separate from her other rock title tracks.

The concept evokes similar feelings to Moonbyul’s concept in “Eclipse,” where she challenged gender norms by portraying herself in traditionally male roles. Her past choice of suits and military-inspired fashion portrayed Moonbyul as a strong hero. Through appearing as a race car driver and motorcyclist in “Hertz,” Moonbyul moves forward at her own pace once again. She resolves to “kick it louder.”

Check out the rest of REV for songs that keep the momentum moving. Moonbyul co-writing and co-composing all its tracks adds a more personal touch. Though MAMAMOO will make their big group comeback in June, the members’ solo projects make the wait easier to bear.
