EVNNE Returns as Five with “뱉어 (Backtalk)”

Originally a project group of Boys Planet members, five of the original seven members have made their first comeback as an officially permanent group. Seungon and Yunseo did not renew their contracts with Jellyfish Entertainment and returned to their respective agencies in December, while Keita, Hanbin, Jeonghyeon, Junghyun and Jihoo signed new contracts to solidify EVNNE’s permanency. This concept was unheard of in the early days of the temporary groups that formed from the popular competition shows spawned from Produce 101, so it’s nice to see that these days we get to keep some of these groups.

“뱉어 (Backtalk)” is a hip-hop influenced track with a moderate tempo and hard-hitting melody. It’s pretty good on first listen if you prefer a more rap and hip-hop focused type of track. I’m not a stan of EVNNE personally, so it’s not necessarily a standout track to me, but it’s good for what it is.

I was most intrigued by the concept of this track, which had a darker undertone. The streetwear inspired outfits are giving teenage rebellion, which is also reflected in a lot of the video shots and the choreography. I will say EVNNE has a strong point in their performance, with the choreography elevating the track. The monochrome styling drives home the rebellious concept as well. I do find it to be an interesting concept to start off their new chapter as five.
