UNCHILD Debuts with a Strong Message of Bold Individuality

UNCHILD is officially here! The six member group under High Up Entertainment made their official debut on April 21 with single album We Are Unchild. The group features a very famous entertainment industry sweetheart in Na Haeun, who had a five million follower YouTube channel and had made major appearances on entertainment shows such as Star King, Immortal Songs and K-Pop Star 4. Though originally under a contract with SM Entertainment, she left and joined the new agency and gave the first indication of UNCHILD’s debut back in December. In an oversaturated market of debuts, this concept to introduce UNCHILD to the K-Pop world was a standout.

The self-titled title track has great synchronicity with the concept, which doesn’t always happen with debuting groups. It’s an upbeat driving pop-EDM track with some hip-hop elements, very loud and fun. The repetition of “we are unchild” can be a bit excessive at times, but it overall doesn’t totally derail the track. It’s fun, quirky, and full of energy, perfectly fitting the group concept.

I love the neon coloring as the main focus of their video, it’s so fun and fresh and really emphasizes the concept of being young and fun. It gives off a sort of rebellious, yet unique and fun style that is very fitting for a youth concept. If we really are going to debut teenagers, they should be looking like teenagers, and I feel like this concept successfully pulls that off. The meaning of the name UNCHILD is used to express individuality and unconventionality, and this styling concept definitely fits that realm perfectly. It doesn’t feel like we often get these kinds of loud and proud individualistic concepts from debuts anymore, so this is a very refreshing start for the girls.
